The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles II Trucks Buses and Trains Book Excerpt:

It is our pleasure to present these proceedings for “The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles II: Trucks, Buses and Trains” International Conference held in Lake - hoe, California, August 26-31, 2007 by Engineering Conferences International (ECI). Brought together were the world’s leading scientists and engineers from industry, universities, and research laboratories, including truck and high-speed train manufacturers and operators. All were gathered to discuss computer simu- tion and experimental techniques to be applied for the design of the more efficient trucks, buses and high-speed trains required in future years. This was the second conference in the series. The focus of the first conference in 2002 was the interplay between computations and experiment in minimizing ae- dynamic drag. The present proceedings, from the 2007 conference, address the development and application of advanced aerodynamic simulation and experim- tal methods for state-of-the-art analysis and design, as well as the development of new ideas and trends holding promise for the coming 10-year time span. Also - cluded, are studies of heavy vehicle aerodynamic tractor and trailer add-on - vices, studies of schemes to delay undesirable flow separation, and studies of - derhood thermal management.

The Aerodynamics of a Container Freight Train Book Excerpt:

This outstanding thesis characterises the aerodynamic flow around a container freight train; investigating how changing container loading configurations affect the magnitude of aerodynamic forces measured on a container. 1/25th scale moving-model freight train experiments were carried out at the University of Birmingham’s TRAIN rig facility to investigate slipstream velocities and static pressure, as well as measuring, using a specifically designed on-board pressure monitoring system, the aerodynamic loads on containers. Results were compared with full scale data and assessed in terms European standards for trackside worker and passenger safety limits. Rail vehicle aerodynamic studies have tended to previously focus on high speed passenger trains in line with increases in train speed. The research presented within this thesis highlights the issues associated with the aerodynamic development around a freight train, providing the foundations for further research and a basis from which to develop international safety standards in relation to freight, as well as high speed trains.

It is our pleasure to present these proceedings from the United Engineering Foundation Conference on The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles: Trucks, Buses and Trains held December 2-6, 2002, in Monterey, California. This Department of Energy, United Engineering Foundation, and industry sponsored conference brought together 90 leading engineering researchers from around the world to discuss the aerodynamic drag of heavy vehicles. Participants from national labs, academia, and industry, including truck manufacturers, discussed how computer simulation and experimental techniques could be used to design more fuel efficient trucks, buses, and trains. Conference topics included comparison of computational fluid dynamics calculations using both steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes, large-eddy simulation, and hybrid turbulence models and experimental data obtained from the Department of Energy sponsored and other wind tunnel experiments. Advanced experimental techniques including three-dimensional particle image velocimetry were presented, along with their use in evaluating drag reduction devices. We would like to thank the UEF conference organizers for their dedication and quick response to sudden deadlines. The International Vehicle Aerodynamics Conference Book Excerpt:

Aerodynamics has never been more central to the development of cars, commercial vehicles, motorbikes, trains and human powered vehicles, driven by the need for efficiency: reducing carbon dioxide emissions, reducing fuel consumption, increasing range and alleviating problems associated with traffic congestion. Reducing vehicle weight makes it more challenging to ensure that they are stable and handle well over a wide range of environmental conditions. Lighter structures are also more vulnerable to aerodynamically induced vibration. Alongside this, customers demand an environment that is quiet, comfortable and maintains their vision of the world around them in all weathers. These aims must be met by designing vehicles that engage customers emotionally, promoting the brand values of manufacturers and operators. This can only be done by collaboration between designers and aerodynamicists. Examine the latest developments in vehicle aerodynamic development Explore opportunities to network and share experiences around different areas Focus on future challenges and the engineering knowledge and technology required to resolve them Discuss other areas of development including handling and stability, tyre aerodynamics and modelling, aeroacoustics and fluid structure interaction

TRANSAERO Book Excerpt:

This volume entitled "TRANSAERO - A European Initiative on Transient Aerodynamics for Railway System Optimisation" contains the results of the contributors during the project th symposium which took place in Paris, France, on 4th and 5 May 1999 hosted by the International Union of Railways, UIC. This symposium was organised within the framework of the BRITE/EURAM project "TRANSAERO" under contract BRPR-CT9S-0067. The project has been co-financed by the European Union within the Fourth Research Framework Programme. More than 100 participants followed the invitation to the symposium. This great response shows the continuing interest in a relevant topic of railway technology and offered us the opportunity to present the recent results of intense European collaboration to the international community of railway aerodynamic experts. In the last few decades, mobility in Europe, based on automobiles for individual traffic and lorries for freight traffic, has grown more and more; yearly growth rates of more than 10% have often been reported by statistics. Even with a fully developed construction programme for motorways and similar high-performance roads, these growth rates cumulated over the years cannot easily be handled in an environment-friendly way. The European Commission has therefore given distinct political signals to get more passengers onto the railways. This policy represents a clear challenge for the next few decades for European railway companies: the considerable increase in mobility in a Europe with falling borders will cause a doubling of the traffic volume within the next 10 to 20 years.
