Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, 1847, Vol. 1 Very far from Wishing to depreciate the labors of other Horticultural bodies, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, both as a Society, and through their individual members, has always endeavored to stimulate the efforts of all to encourage and extend Horticulture, being sensible that the existence and prosperity of the Society depended entirely on its widest diffusion. But it must be evident on referring to the quality and number of varieties of fruits at the annual exhibitions in Boston for some years past, that there does exist here a vast accumulation of knowledge and experience in the selection, growth and cultivation of these bounties of Providence - and that in this knowledge and experience, the public demand and have a right to expect to share, in return for the patronage bestowed on the Society with so unsparing a hand. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Vol. 1: For the Year 1901 Society. It is here in this temple dedicated to horticulture that for a period of thirty-six years the Society has achieved its greatest success, unequalled, both in the practice and the science of horti culture, in any corresponding period in the country's history. The ten gentlemen constituting the building committee have all gone to their reward, save one - for many years a most notable, public spirited benefactor to horticultural and arboreal progress. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Year 1918, Vol. 1 I happened to be glancing over the report of the annual meeting in 1866 and mention is there made of an award to Francis Dana for the introduction of the Dana's Hovey, to my mind one of the very nicest pears grown. How long is it, I wonder, since anyone of our members has been awarded a prize for the introduction of so good a pear as that! The Exhibition of the Products of Children's Gardens was wonderfully successful this year. It showed beyond doubt that the children are interested in the growing of commercial crops, perhaps especially stimulated this year by the war conditions. We believe our annual show for children is specially desirable and should be continued from year to year with such variation in program as to broaden the field of activity. N ow for the coming year. It is certainly for the best interests of our Society to continue our efforts to increase the membership. As a result of our efforts last year we secured 83 new members. We have had a considerable number of deaths but our membership roll has increased from 925 to 979 and a large proportion of the new members were life members. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, for the Year 1878, Vol. 1 The discussions on horticultural subjects have been of great ser vice, and are, in my opinion, one of the best of the new features lately added to the Society. Much as they have done for us already, they are capable of doing far more. With us, as with all horti cultural or agricultural clubs or societies, discussion is subject to the same evil that besets our exhibitions. It is apt to go round with the same persons, in the same groove, keeping all the time at about the same level of intelligence 'and knowledge, and so fail to gain its real object, which is to develop those habits of investiga tion and re ection, without which the horticulturist can never be master of his craft. N ow I do not say that our discussions have been of this barren sort. On the contrary, I think that they have done real good. But, judging by former years - for during the last I have unfortunately been unable to attend them they might be made to do a great deal more good. If members would more generally share in them, preparing themselves beforehand to do so by recalling what their own experience may have taught them about the subject announced, and then, by means of books and jour nals, comparing their own results with those reached by others, our discussions would become a powerful means of stimulating observa tion and thought. Two other experiments have been made of late in connection with the discussions, and with similar objects. Prizes have been offered for Essays and persons of known ability, not always mem bers of the Society, have been invited to deliver lectures before it. Both experiments have had a good degree of success. Some of the lectures especially have been admirably suited to awaken interest and kindle a Spirit of inquiry. There has been great improvement in our printed Transactions, both in the quantity and quality of their contents, and in type graphical and literary correctness. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Year 1914, Vol. 1 The work of the Society in promoting interest in, and spreading knowledge of horticulture, has been carried forward energetically during the past year. There never was a time when the popular interest in gardening was so evident. The attendance at our lectures last year averaged the largest on record. Your Trustees believe that the Society should do still more In the way of teaching practical gardening, and to this end have arranged for practical demonstrations of garden work in our lecture room. They have also planned to supplement our time-honored Saturday lectures by a series of visits to places of horticultural interest in this vicinity. These excursions may be participated in by members of the Society and other interested persons, and they will be under the guidance of a competent horticulturist. Our Society has an unusual opportunity now to give direction and guidance to the present earnest, but too often uncertain and erring efforts of our people to utilize and beautify their gardens and grounds. The teachers in our public schools, the children's gardens in the tenement districts, and suburban garden clubs are all doing good work. I wish that our financial condition would permit us to establish classes for the training of teachers for such work. While serving for several years upon your Library Committee, I became familiar with the great benefits that would result from increased shelf room; and then, at the request of that Committee, you approved of suggested improvements that gave a gallery, and consequent additional shelves. A wise continuity of pur chases must be made to keep useful sets of publications com piete; and the purchase of needed works; when a chance offers, is an important factor in keeping your library up to date. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Year 1905, Vol. 1 This point is further emphasized by a comparison Of our New England flora with that of Great Britain. Of the species grow ing in the British Isles only above an altitude of feet, i. E., in the mountain country where the primitive vegetation is but little disturbed, 64 per cent are also native in the cold forests or on the mountains of northern New England. But of the species which occur everywhere at low altitudes and in the thickly-settled and closely-farmed districts of England only 23 per cent are. Native to New England as well, while more than 50 per cent have become established in New England as weeds. Opposed to this we have the striking fact that in temperate Europe barely 1 per cent of the wild plants have been introduced from the United States. Description : Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Year 1908, Vol. 1 In order to place the subject of the origin of the Concord grape fully before you it will be necessary to go back and trace very briefly the history of the grape up to the time that our story proper shall begin. The grape is probably the Oldest of cultivated fruits and certainly no other fruit has been cultivated so extensively, although its earlier uses were largely confined to wine making. In this connection we hear a great deal of it in the Bible, even as far back as Noah, who planted vineyards. The grape is undoubtedly of Asiatic origin, but was early introduced into Europe, where now as many' as 300 varieties are cultivated in the great wine-growing countries. European varieties of the grape were brought to America very' early in the history of the colonies, particularly in the South; but all attempts at cultivation failed owing to the incursions of mildew and rot. Early growers in America followed the same ideas that were practiced in Europe and planted on terraced hillsides. So when European varieties proved unsuccessful many horticulturists turned their attention towards our native grapes and attempted to, improve them through cultivation. As far back as 1800 many efforts were thus made, but it was only in the South that any real success was attained and Isabella and Catawba were produced from native varieties, the former in South Carolina and the latter in Georgia. The introduction of the Isabella in 1819 gave a great impetus to grape growing; and as this variety proved hardy in New England, everyone who owned a back yard bought some of these vines and began growing grapes;. So that up to 1850 this was the only grape grown in New England for table use with the possible exception of the Diana.
