The Little Prince Book Excerpt:

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince) – is an allegorical fable and the most famous work of Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It was first published in April 1943 by publisher “Reynal & Hitchcock” in both English and French. Saint-Exupery wrote the novella while living in New York City; a city he fled to after the occupation of his native France by Nazi Germany. The literary roots of the fable are based on the wandering plot of the rejected prince; while the emotional – on a child’s view of the world. The story line is built around the travels of the Little Prince who hails from the tiny planet B-612. Gradually, his journey becomes not just the literal movement from planet to planet, but more of a way to discover life and the world. Thanks to Saint-Exupery’s artistic methods, adult readers see in the fable, a transcript of a conversation of two old friends; while children get a vivid and easily understandable description of the world that surrounds them. Due mostly to these two factors, The Little Prince has achieved such high levels of recognition and popularity.

The Lawyer and the Little Prince Book Excerpt:

Joseph Tandet, practicing entertainment attorney and a theatre and film producer in New York City, chronicles the adventures and misadventures he experienced bringing the classic story, The Little Prince, to the big screen. He relates how a little yeshiva boy from Brooklyn, growing up with sparse parental encouragement, attended college and law school, litigated a string of negligence cases, and went on to surmount the daunting obstacles and experience the heights of the entertainment world and Hollywood. Who would have believed it? Tandet convinced the French publisher, Gallimard, and the Saint-Exupéry family to sign a boilerplate contract under the pretense that Gene Kelley had already signed on as the leading man. Armed with nothing but nerve and chutzpah, he was able to make his way through the valley of the moguls and convince Paramount Pictures to produce a feature-length film based upon the popular story. Tandet reveals the conversations he had with directors, actors, writers, and others he met on his path to taking the magical, musical fable based upon Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's story from an idea to a feature film. This engaging memoir provides captivating inside details regarding a film that is still popular, decades after its release.

The Little Prince Book Excerpt:

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's timeless tale, reissued in a beautiful clothbound edition designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry first published The Little Prince in 1943, only a year before his plane vanished over the Mediterranean during a reconnaissance mission. Nearly eighty years later, this fable of love and loneliness has lost none of its power. The narrator is a downed pilot in the Sahara Desert, frantically trying to repair his wrecked plane. His efforts are interrupted one day by the apparition of a little prince, who asks him to draw a sheep. "In the face of an overpowering mystery, you don't dare disobey," the narrator recalls. "Absurd as it seemed, a thousand miles from all inhabited regions and in danger of death, I took a scrap of paper and a pen out of my pocket." And so begins their dialogue, which stretches the narrator's imagination in all sorts of surprising, childlike directions.

Thinking with Animation Book Excerpt:

This volume brings together scholars based predominantly in Asia to contribute provocative and experimental essays on the dynamic relationship between animation and philosophy. In an inventive and playful philosophical way, they address not only the mainstay of Japanese animation, but also Korean film, picture books and Mickey Mouse to understand what we might call film-philosophy in Asia. In thinking animation with concepts from the technicolour philosophies of Deleuze, Guattari, Stiegler, Benjamin, Kristeva and Heidegger, the book sees animation not as a representation of a philosophical idea per se, but conceptualizes it as a philosophical thinking-device. In the images themselves, what is at work is not just the thinking of a particular director or manga artist, but, rather, thinking as such, through and by the images themselves. The scholars in this collection are committed to thinking images themselves as thought-experiments and thinking machines.

Discovering the Hidden Wisdom of The Little Prince Book Excerpt:

“The story behind one of the world’s most popular books . . . Many will enjoy learning about Saint-Exupéry and his life” (Kirkus Reviews). The Little Prince is revered around the world and one of the bestselling books of all time—two hundred million copies have been sold in 270 languages. Part of its allure is that is seems incredibly wise, yet it is so simple it is read as a work for children. Yet its meaning is elusive, and its place amid the writings of an adventurer and war hero acclaimed for dramatic bestsellers like Night Flight and Flight to Arras, is mysterious. In this book, Pierre Lassus reexamines the story of The Little Prince against the facts of Saint-Exupéry’s own extraordinary life, from his cherished but fatherless childhood in aristocratic poverty to his career as a pioneering pilot. His plane had broken down in the desert before. He had adopted a fox, when posted at the Spanish fort of Cape Juby, in southern Morocco. He had known the world of business before becoming pilot; he had also known unrequited love. Like his little protagonist’s, his body was never found after his plane disappeared in World War II. He was working on his spiritual autobiography when he died, and there too, Lassus finds resonances and keys to the understated spirituality of his last great book. “A touching and deeply moving analysis of a book that is cherished by millions.” —Booklist

For example, there are said to be 70 translations into Chinese. The book was written in French. The English translation was dictated by the publisher. The Little Prince describes his travels to ten planets. The other little planets are asteroids that circle the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroids have numbers rather than names. The Little Prince lives on one of these asteroids and visits the others. It appears to be similar to and a predecessor of the "Star Treck" TV series involving a space ship that goes from one planet to another finding different life forms and new adventures on each planet.

The Oxford Handbook of the Hollywood Musical Book Excerpt:

Since the release of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! in 2001, the film musical has returned to popularity as one of the most important cinematic genres, a box office hit that appeals to audiences of all ages. Yet the history of the musical on film goes back over seven decades earlier than that, stretching from early examples like The Jazz Singer (1927), the first ever film with synchronized sound, through the Astaire-Rogers musicals of the 1930s, the MGM and Warner Brothers extravaganzas of the 1940s and '50s, and the roadshow era of the 1960s. The genre's renaissance with La La Land (2016) and The Greatest Showman (2017) proves that it remains as appealing as ever, capable of both high critical acclaim and widespread box office success. The Oxford Handbook of the Hollywood Musical, curated by editor Dominic Broomfield-McHugh, reflects and expands on current scholarship on the film musical in a handbook that mixes new discoveries through archival research with new perspectives on familiar titles. It addresses issues such as why audiences accept people bursting into song in musicals; how technology affects the way numbers are staged; and how writers have adapted their material to suit certain stars. It also looks at critical issues such as racism and sexism, and assesses the role and nature of the film musical in the twenty-first century. A remarkable survey at the cutting edge of the field, The Oxford Handbook of the Hollywood Musical will be a resource for students and scholars alike for years to come.

Translation in the Public Sphere Book Excerpt:

This book brings together the study of translation with public sphere theory, in order to discuss social communication as it really happens. Through illuminating examples and case studies, translation is shown to be a mediating mechanism in all public debate conducted both within one society and between societies. The author offers a detailed discussion of the kinds of translation most relevant to public sphere communication and their properties. Throughout, he argues persuasively that it is impossible to study the public sphere without taking account of translation in it, and that the interaction between the public as a collective inevitably involves translation. Further, the author suggests new methodological approaches to studying not only translation in the public sphere but public debate itself as a kind of translation. Building on the achievements of both the public sphere scholarship and Translation Studies, this work fills a significant lacuna in existing literature and will set the agenda for future studies at the intersection of the two. It will provide an invaluable resource for scholars and students of the public sphere and translation, as well as academics in the broader fields of sociology, political science and communication.

From Here to Diversity Book Excerpt:

From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues sees interculturalism as movement, transit, travel, and the dynamics between cultures. Contemporary intercultural travel is a global journey, a circumnavigation at the speed of light that underwrites all the comings and goings, the departures and arrivals, the transmissions and receptions that are implicit in this title. Hence, From Here to Diversity examines the motivations, characteristics and implications of cultural interactions in their perpetual movement, devoid of spatial or temporal borders, in a dangerous but stimulating indefinition of limits. In the contemporary intercultural dialogue, new voices are making themselves heard, as valuable sources of study: the voices of women; non-occidentals; the non-powerful; forgotten narratives of a past that was as intercultural as the present (after all, what is colonialism other than a perverse form of interculturality?); global entertainment; tourism; oral literature; diaries; mythical narratives; the cinema; ethnography; and new teachings, among so many others. Because this project is also intercultural at its source and subject, From Here to Diversity: Globalization and Intercultural Dialogues adds to the coherence of the project by including contributions from the most wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities, without fear of the alterity that, after all, we propose to study.

Travels in India Book Excerpt:

Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, in some respects, is one of the most famous traveler who visited India in the 17th century. He made 6 trips to India between 1630 and the 1668. He was a jeweler by profession, and made a considerable fortune by trading in precious stones from Asia and selling them in Europe. Tavernier traveled extensively in Persia, Afghanistan and India. This 2 volume work is a compilation of his 6 voyages and makes a fascinating read. He gives glowing accounts of the 2 mughal kings whose court he visited, namely shajahan and Aurangzeb. This work is full of rich detail; he describes all that he saw and experienced: he gives descriptions of his journey, the people, their customs and manners, their religion, the rituals, the politics and political relations with neighboring countries, he also give copious notices of the jewels and diamond mines in the south of India. A map of his travels in India is given in the book. This book is a reprint of the 1925 edition.
