While travel literature, particularly the Italian travel literature of D. H. Lawrence - Twilight in Italy (1916), Sea and Sardinia (1921), and Etruscan Places (1927; 1932) - has received a great deal of attention in recent years, nobody has examined this work from a Bakhtinian viewpoint. This approach allows us a unique perspective as well as a new appreciation of both Lawrence and Mikhail Bakhtin. This is also true with respect to translation studies where the reader will find Lawrence's work on Giovanni Verga presented in a new and suggestive fashion. In short, this book provides new insights into D. H. Lawrence's relationship to the Italian Other (as well as charts the permutations within himself). This book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of two of the greatest literary figures of the twentieth century, D. H. Lawrence and Mikhail Bakhtin.

In 1912, a young D.H. Lawrence left England for the first time and travelled to northern Italy. He spent nearly a year on the shores of Lake Garda, lodged in elegantly decaying houses set amid lemon groves and surrounded by the fading life of traditional Italy. This is a travel book unlike any other, where landscapes and people are backdrops to Lawrences deeper wanderings - into philosophy, opinion, life, nature, religion and the fate of man. With sensuous descriptions of late harvests, darkening days and fragile ancient traditions, Twilight in Italy is suffused with nostalgia and premonition.

"Twilight in Italy" is a small book of travel essays, worth reading both for their own sake and for the light they throw on the context of Lawrence's work.D. H. Lawrence was a prolific and versatile writer whose plays, poems, novels, novellas, and short stories-more than forty volumes produced in a writing life of twenty years-often need to be read in the context of his essays, pamphlets, and travel books. There are four of these last, excluding the passages of description in his letters recording his expatriation in Europe, America, and Australia. The first of these journeys is recorded in his first travel book, "Twilight in Italy".

For many of us DH Lawrence was a schoolboy hero. Who can forget sniggering in class at the mention of 'Women In Love' or 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'? Lawrence was a talented if nomadic writer whose novels were passionately received, suppressed at times and generally at odds with Establishment values. This of course did not deter him. At his death in 1930 at the young age of 44 he was more often thought of as a pornographer but in the ensuing years he has come to be more rightly regarded as one of the most imaginative writers these shores have produced. As well as his novels he was also a masterful poet (he wrote over 800 of them), a travel writer as well as an author of many classic short stories. Here we publish his travel writings 'Twilight in Italy'. Once again Lawrence shows his hand as a brilliant writer. Delving into landscapes and peeling them back to reveal the inner heart.

The imperial road to Italy goes from Munich across the Tyrol, through Innsbruck and Bozen to Verona, over the mountains. Here the great processions passed as the emperors went South, or came home again from rosy Italy to their own Germany. And how much has that old imperial vanity clung to the German soul? Did not the German kings inherit the empire of bygone Rome? It was not a very real empire, perhaps, but the sound was high and splendid.Maybe a certain Grössenwahn is inherent in the German nature. If only nations would realize that they have certain natural characteristics, if only they could understand and agree to each other's particular nature, how much simpler it would all be.The imperial procession no longer crosses the mountains, going South. That is almost forgotten, the road has almost passed out of mind. But still it is there, and its signs are standing. The crucifixes are there, not mere attributes of the road, yet still having something to do with it. The imperial processions, blessed by the Pope and accompanied by the great bishops, must have planted the holy idol like a new plant among the mountains, there where it multiplied and grew according to the soil, and the race that received it.

In recent decades, critical and theoretical debate in the field of culture and literature has called into question many literary categories, has re-discussed the literary canon, and has totally renovated critical approaches in the wake of major changes in western society such as the irruption of new cultural identities, the disruption of the well-established Euro-centric conception, and the need to establish new world visions. D. H. Lawrence has been a focus for critical debate since his early publications in the first decades of the 20th century. The force of his thought, his courageous challenge against the most important values of western industrial society, his rejection of England and its bourgeois values, his choice to live in exile, his never-ending quest for lost vital meanings, his open-mindedness in coming into contact with different worlds and cultures, and the revolutionary impact of his writing have all provided critics with important issues for discussion. Most of Lawrence’s works are still being read and analysed through ever-new critical lenses and approaches. This volume brings together a selection of papers delivered at the 13th International D. H. Lawrence Conference, D. H. Lawrence: New Life, New Utterance, New Perspectives held in Gargnano in 2014, on Lake Garda: the place of Lawrence’s first Italian sojourn, where he started a “new life” with Frieda and a new phase as a writer. The essays selected for Part I of this volume offer new readings of Lawrence’s work and ideology through various theoretical and philosophical approaches, drawing comparisons with philosophers and thinkers such as Bataille, Darwin, Derrida, Heidegger, and Benjamin, among others. Part II focuses on translation, a concept which can be extended to cultural mediation, as it can be applied not only to the proper translation of texts from one language into another, but also to travel writing and to transcodification, as is the case of film versions of Lawrence’s novels.

Twilight in Italy by D. H Lawrence is a brilliantly written travelogue based on his journal. He embarked South, to Italy on foot with his German wife Frieda, and has described all his thrilling and interesting experiences. Leaving out the famous and the historical, he visits the suburbs and the people of Italy and beautifully reflects on their lifestyles. Fascinating!
