Insulin Resistance Book Excerpt:

In Insulin Resistance: The Metabolic Syndrome X, outstanding investigators thoughtfully summarize our current understanding of how insulin resistance and its compensating hyperinsulinemia (Syndrome X) play a major role in the pathogenesis and clinical course of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease-the so-called diseases of Western civilization-as well as polycystic ovary disease. Under the aegis of Gerald Reaven, the discoverer of Syndrome X, the distinguished authorities writing here detail for the first time the pathophysiological consequences and the clinical syndromes, excluding Type 2 diabetes, related to insulin resistance. They also examine the genetic and lifestyle factors that contribute to the wide differences in insulin action that exist in the population at large. Each author has been encouraged to present a point of view that reflects their unique insights. The first authoritative book on the subject, Insulin Resistance: The Metabolic Syndrome X illuminates the special importance of insulin resistance as a major cause of hypertension, heart disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Its thoughtful and detailed approach will make it an essential reference for basic and clinical researchers seeking to understand these critical phenomena.

The Insulin Resistance Diet Book Excerpt:

Control Your Insulin Resistance, Supercharge Your Energy, And Strip Off Body-Fat With This Insulin Resistance DietImagine doing everything right - eating clean, training hard, taking supplements as advised - and yet still not making any traction on your fat loss goals. Can you imagine how frustrating that would be? Well, chances are if you're reading this you don't need to imagine it - because it is your current reality! The reason that you are unable to lose body fat likely has more to do with your level of insulin sensitivity than anything else. Insulin sensitivity refers to how much of an insulin response your body gets in response to a given amount of carbohydrate - in other words, how well you body uses blood sugar. Insulin is one of the most powerful hormones in the body. Its job is to push energy into your muscle, liver and fat cells. Insulin is released from the beta-cells in the pancreatic function of your pancreas. This happens when you take in any type of carbohydrate. How much insulin is released depends on the type of and quantity of carbohydrate that you are consuming. Over training, stress and bad general eating habits can also lead to insulin resistance. Insulin is drawn into the cell by receptor sites on the outside of each cell. If you are over-taxing your pancreas by taking in too many carbs your brain will signal the cells to shut down receptor site function. All of that insulin that should be powering your cells is going to sit around as fat. The key to becoming super lean is to figure out how to become insulin sensitive. This book will show you exactly how to do just that. Insulin Resistance Book Excerpt:

In the mid 1990s, Drs. Gerald Reaven identified a constellation of clinical findings, known variously as the metabolic syndrome, syndrome X, insulin resistance s- drome or insulin resistance-related disorders, that are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. Interest in this topic grew rapidly, culminating in the publication by this series of the book, Insulin Resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome X, edited by Drs. Reaven and Laws in 1999. Since the original publication of that now classic volume, the world’s population has continued to become more obese and sedentary and the prevalence of disorders related to insulin resistance has continued to increase throughout the developed and developing world. Of great concern in the last decade is the extension of these deleterious lifestyle patterns to the pediatric population, leading to both obesity and the appearance of insulin resistance-related disorders in youth as well as adults. Today, about one in three children and adolescents in the United States is overweight or obese, and this prevalence approaches one in two among adolescents in certain minority groups. In addition, components of this cardiovascular risk constellation are now being recognized in young adults, adolescents, and even children. Youth are increasingly developing type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, polycystic ovarian syndrome, sleep apnea, orthopedic and psychiatric complications, as well as other complications of obesity and insulin resistance.

Recent developments in research on diabetes mellitus embrace basic disciplines such as physiology, biochemistry, morphology and evolving sub-specialities. Fundamental studies on the heterogeneous diabetic syndrome are oriented towards regulatory principles of cell metabolism, genetic control mechanisms of insulin biosynthesis and secretion, as well as autoimmune events implicated in selective destruction of pancreatic ß-cell. In parallel, efforts are made for a better understanding of normal versus impaired biological actions, both of insulin and insulin-like growth factor I, and the translocation process of glucose transporters in insulin-responsive target cells.

Insulin Resistance ECAB Book Excerpt:

The insulin resistance syndrome can be defined as insulin resistance, compensatory hyperinsulinemia, and their associated co-morbidities. Clinically, the term insulin resistance syndrome describes a constellation of abnormalities such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes/hyperglycemia, and coronary artery disease. Insulin is responsible for glucose uptake into the body cells and tissues. The response of the cells to insulin varies from individual to individual. In some individuals, the tissue response to insulin may be diminished. This means that even with adequate levels of insulin, the glucose uptake into the cells and tissues is not optimal. This results in a compensatory over-secretion of insulin from the pancreas. The persistence of high levels of insulin in the blood or hyperinsulinemia is thought to be responsible for some of the abnormalities associated with this condition. However, the exact causal association of the condition with these disorders and the pathophysiology of their evolution are unclear. The most common underlying mechanism proposed is increased free fatty acids from abdominal fat in individuals with central obesity. This leads to deranged insulin signaling, reduced muscular glucose uptake, increased triglyceride synthesis, and hepatic gluconeogenesis. A genetic basis of the disease as well as several other factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α, adiponectin, leptin, Interleukin-6, and some adipokines have also been implicated. Insulin resistance syndrome is of clinical significance because of its association with potentially debilitating conditions that contribute to long-term morbidity and even mortality of the individual. People with insulin resistance syndrome are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, myocardial infarction, polycystic ovarian disease, and fatty liver. In this book, we have tried to collate the experiences of the pioneers of this field on the subject and provide the reader a comprehensive view on the topic along with practical management points, which we are sure will benefit the physicians in their clinical practice. The contributors have focused on the condition as is prevalent in our subcontinent and have tried to give an insight on the issues pertaining to the same with a topical flavor.

The failure of insulin signaling – a condition known as insulin resistance – is a key pathological feature of both type 2 diabetes (T2DM, systemic insulin resistance) and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRDs, brain insulin resistance) and greatly contribute to their development. Considerable overlap has been identified in the risk factors, comorbidities and putative pathophysiological mechanisms of ADRDs and T2DM, thus proposing AD as type 3 diabetes.

Understanding High Blood Sugar and Insulin Resistance Book Excerpt:

When you have warning signs your blood sugar is too high, your body could be trying to tell you that you are on the verge of experiencing borderline diabetes, or prediabetes. This is a condition in people that develops before they get type 2 diabetes. Sometimes you will hear words like 'you are becoming glucose intolerant' or 'insulin resistant'. What it basically means is that your blood sugar levels have reached the higher than normal level - and yet not quite high enough that you are considered to have diabetes. When people are in the prediabetes phase, the pancreas is producing enough insulin when you eat carbohydrates, but the insulin has become less effective in removing that sugar from your bloodstream. Then your blood sugar rises. If you have been told you are pre-diabetic, you are not alone because in 2015, in the USA, it was estimated that there were over 84.1 million Americans over the age of 18 who were in that stage. If you work that out, it equates to 1 in 3 people. If you are pre-diabetic, it doesn't mean you are definitely going to get full-blown diabetes, but you need to be aware of what could lie ahead for you. You stand the risk of developing type 2 diabetes 5-15 times higher than a person who has normal blood sugar levels. If you don't start making healthy changes to your diet and lifestyle, the warning signs don't go away; they increase. Only 10% of those who have prediabetes realize it because often the symptoms just don't display.
