**Calculus On Manifolds Book Excerpt:**

This little book is especially concerned with those portions of ?advanced calculus? in which the subtlety of the concepts and methods makes rigor difficult to attain at an elementary level. The approach taken here uses elementary versions of modern methods found in sophisticated mathematics. The formal prerequisites include only a term of linear algebra, a nodding acquaintance with the notation of set theory, and a respectable first-year calculus course (one which at least mentions the least upper bound (sup) and greatest lower bound (inf) of a set of real numbers). Beyond this a certain (perhaps latent) rapport with abstract mathematics will be found almost essential.

**Using Counter examples In Calculus Book Excerpt:**

This book makes accessible to calculus students in high school, college and university a range of counter-examples to “conjectures” that many students erroneously make. In addition, it urges readers to construct their own examples by tinkering with the ones shown here in order to enrich the example spaces to which they have access, and to deepen their appreciation of conspectus and conditions applying to theorems./a

**Head Order Techniques and Other Pragmatics of Lambda Calculus Graph Reduction Book Excerpt:**

Available in Paperback Available in eBook editions (PDF format) Institution: Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY, USA) Advisor(s): Prof. Klaus J. Berkling Degree: Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science Year: 1993 Book Information: 248 pages Publisher: Dissertation.com ISBN-10: 1612337570 ISBN-13: 9781612337579 View First 25 pages: (free download) Abstract The operational aspects of Lambda Calculus are studied as a fundamental basis for high-order functional computation. We consider systems having full reduction semantics, i.e., equivalence-preserving transformations of functions. The historic lineage from Eval-Apply to SECD to RTNF/RTLF culminates in the techniques of normal-order graph Head Order Reduction (HOR). By using a scalar mechanism to artificially bind relatively free variables, HOR makes it relatively effortless to reduce expressions beyond weak normal form and to allow expression-level results while exhibiting a well-behaved linear self-modifying code structure. Several variations of HOR are presented and compared to other efficient reducers, with and without sharing, including a conservative breadth-first one which mechanically takes advantage of the inherent, fine-grained parallelism of the head normal form. We include abstract machine and concrete implementations of all the reducers in pure functional code. Benchmarking comparisons are made through a combined time-space efficiency metric. The original results indicate that circa 2010 reduction rates of 10-100 million reductions per second can be achieved in software interpreters and a billion reductions per second can be achieved by a state-of-the art custom VLSI implementation.

**Essential Calculus Early Transcendentals Enhanced Edition Book Excerpt:**

The Enhanced Edition of Stewart's Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals is accompanied by an WebAssign course, featuring thousands of additional algorithmic problems, stepped out solutions, and new learning tools for students. The Enhanced Edition also offers an online version of the textbook in the form of an eBook, giving students the opportunity to access their textbook from anywhere. Students have access to the Quick Start Guide for WebAssign, which allows seamless transition from the original text to the enhanced book. This book is a response to those instructors who feel that calculus textbooks are too big. In writing the book James Stewart asked himself: What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? Stewart's ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, ENHANCED EDITION offers a concise approach to teaching calculus that focuses on major concepts and supports those concepts with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Enhanced edition contains almost all of the same topics as the large text. The author achieved this relative brevity mainly by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the website, www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the reduced size of the book, there is still a modern flavor: Conceptual understanding and technology are not neglected, though they are not as prominent as in Stewart's other books. ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, ENHANCED EDITION has been written with the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart's textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world. **Semantics of the Probabilistic Typed Lambda Calculus Book Excerpt:**

This book takes a foundational approach to the semantics of probabilistic programming. It elaborates a rigorous Markov chain semantics for the probabilistic typed lambda calculus, which is the typed lambda calculus with recursion plus probabilistic choice. The book starts with a recapitulation of the basic mathematical tools needed throughout the book, in particular Markov chains, graph theory and domain theory, and also explores the topic of inductive definitions. It then defines the syntax and establishes the Markov chain semantics of the probabilistic lambda calculus and, furthermore, both a graph and a tree semantics. Based on that, it investigates the termination behavior of probabilistic programs. It introduces the notions of termination degree, bounded termination and path stoppability and investigates their mutual relationships. Lastly, it defines a denotational semantics of the probabilistic lambda calculus, based on continuous functions over probability distributions as domains. The work mostly appeals to researchers in theoretical computer science focusing on probabilistic programming, randomized algorithms, or programming language theory.

**University Calculus Book Excerpt:**

Calculus hasn't changed, but your students have. Many of today's students have seen calculus before at the high school level. However, professors report nationwide that students come into their calculus courses with weak backgrounds in algebra and trigonometry, two areas of knowledge vital to the mastery of calculus. University Calculus: Alternate Edition responds to the needs of today's students by developing their conceptual understanding while maintaining a rigor appropriate to the calculus course. The Alternate Edition is the perfect alternative for instructors who want the same quality and quantity of exercises as Thomas' Calculus, Media Upgrade, Eleventh Edition but prefer a faster-paced presentation. University Calculus: Alternate Edition is now available with an enhanced MyMathLab(t) course-the ultimate homework, tutorial and study solution for today's students. The enhanced MyMathLab(t) course includes a rich and flexible set of course materials and features innovative Java(t) Applets, Group Projects, and new MathXL(R) exercises. This text is also available with WebAssign(R) and WeBWorK(R).

**Achievement of Ontario Grade 13 Students in University Book Excerpt:**

The quality of preparation for college provided students by Ontario's educational system was assessed. First-year university achievement was compared for students from Ontario's Grade 13 and for students from the final matriculation year or equivalent of other Canadian provinces. University admission procedures were also studied to determine to what extent special requirements or adjustments were made for students who completed their secondary school education in different provinces. Additionally, the university achievement of the better students and the adjustment problems of all students in the first and second years of the university were examined. Four Ontario universities and two out-of-province universities that enrolled a significant number of students from Ontario were evaluated. Findings include the following: where secondary school grades were either specified or implied as admission requirements, Ontario students were typically allowed to gain entry into Ontario universities with the lowest grades of all students, followed by students from Quebec, Western Canada, and Atlantic Canada; in the Quebec university admission requirements to the arts, science, and commerce programs equate Ontario Grade 13 graduates with year of College d'enseignements generale et professional graduates and require students from other provinces to take a qualifying year; in comparison with students from other provinces, Ontario students in Ontario universities tend to receive higher marks in engineering and do as well or better in arts, science, and commerce; Ontario students tended to enter the university at a later age than students from all other provinces except Quebec.
