Metastatic Progression and Tumour Heterogeneity Book Excerpt:

Improved understanding of the cellular and molecular makeup of tumors in the last 30 years has unraveled a previously unexpected level of heterogeneity among tumor cells as well as within the tumor microenvironment. The concept of tumor heterogeneity underlines the realization that different tumors can display significant differences in their genomic content as well as in their overall behavior. Our capacity to better understand the heterogeneous make up of tumors has very important consequences on our ability to design efficient therapeutic strategies to improve patient survival. This book highlights several aspects of tumor heterogeneity in the context of metastatic development and summarize some of the challenges posed by heterogeneity for tumor diagnostics and therapeutic management of tumors.

Your Cannabis CBD THC Ratio Book Excerpt:

The author of the game-changing Cannabis Health Index returns with a book designed specifically for general readers who want to understand how THC and CBD can benefit them. While CBD is the new buzzword for health and wellness, many researchers and practitioners believe that the symbiotic relationship between THC and CBD, known as the entourage effect, allows for greater therapeutic benefits for patients. Unfortunately, when it comes to optimizing that ratio to a particular health condition, it is often a process of trial and error for medical patients. Your Cannabis CBD:THC Ratio provides detailed information on how to find the best ratios of CBD:THC and covers the preferred ratios of these two primary cannabinoids for ten prevalent medical conditions —including cancer, chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and many others. Blesching’s unique chemotype-based system takes into account CBD:THC ratios, the various forms of cannabis medicine available to consumers, and the subjective therapeutic dosages, presenting a complete evidence-based methodology. -- Uwe Blesching, PH.D.

Cannabis as Medicine Book Excerpt:

For hundreds of years cannabis has been used as a therapeutic medicine around the world. Cannabis was an accepted medicine during the second half of the 19th century, but its use declined because single agent pain medications were advocated by physicians who demanded standardization of medicines. It was not until 1964 when the chemical structure of THC (delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol) was elucidated and its pharmacological effects began to be understood. Numerous therapeutic effects of cannabis have been reviewed, but cannabis-based medicines are still an enigma because of legal issues. Many patients could benefit from cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids found in Cannabis sativa L. These patients suffer from medical conditions including chronic pain, chronic inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and other debilitating illnesses. As more states are legalizing medical cannabis, prescribers need a reliable source which provides clinical information in a succinct format. This book focuses on the science of cannabis as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory supplement. It discusses cannabis uses in the human body for bone health/osteoporosis; brain injury and trauma; cancer; diabetes; gastrointestinal conditions; mental health disorders; insomnia; pain; anxiety disorders; depression; migraines; eye disorders; and arthritis and inflammation. There is emphasis on using the whole plant — from root to raw leaves and flowers discussing strains, extraction and analysis, and use of cannabis-infused edibles. Features: Provides an understanding of the botanical and biochemistry behind cannabis as well as its use as a dietary supplement. Discusses endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid receptors. Includes information on antioxidant benefits, pain receptors using cannabinoids, and dosage guidelines. Presents research on cannabis treatment plans, drug-cannabis interactions and dosing issues, cannabis vapes, edibles, creams, and suppositories. Multiple appendices including a glossary of cannabis vocabulary, how to use cannabis products, a patient guide and recipes as well as information on cannabis for pets.

Metastasis Book Excerpt:

"Metastasis is the most dreaded aspect of the carcinogenic process. More than ninety percent of all cancer deaths are attributable to the consequences of the primary tumor successfully colonizing distant organs. Unlike the situation with colon cancer, a patient with breast cancer can never be considered cured, since as many as a third of breast cancer patients who have apparently curative surgery for their primary tumors ultimately relapse with metastatic disease, sometimes decades later. Much effort is now devoted to understanding this process of metastasis, and finding ways to predict and prevent its occurrence. This publication covers recent advances in the field, specifically as they relate to breast cancer. The availability of new tools and technological approaches has prompted a reconsideration of the very definition of a metastasis. Furthermore, a number of commonly held myths are being explored and a new definition of a metastasis, with important implications for clinical staging, is being proposed. Also, a novel conceptual framework for cancer progression based on the system-level dynamics of regulatory networks is presented and the role of chemokines in mediating some of the evolving transactional processes between tumor and stroma is being reviewed."

Tumor Dormancy Quiescence and Senescence Vol 3 Book Excerpt:

This third volume in the series Tumor Dormancy, Quiescence, and Senescence discusses the role of tumor dormancy and senescence in a number of diseases, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer and leukemia. The contents are organized under five subheadings: General Applications, Role in Breast Cancer, Role in Ovarian Cancer, Role in Leukemia and Role in Cardiovascular Disease. The first section includes basic information on the definition of dormancy, how cells become senescent and what they do, along with an appraisal of the current state of research on dormancy. Section Two explores dormancy in breast cancer, including the progression of hormone-dependent mammary tumors after dormancy. Section Three details the resistance of Type II ovarian tumors, in which the resistant tumor cell population persists after chemotherapy in a state of dormancy, with recurrent tumors arising upon transformation of such dormant cells back to malignant growth. This section explains how lineage, histological subtypes and grade influence the differential response of ovarian cancer resistance to platinum drugs. The fourth section explores leukemia, discussing regulation of the promyelocytic leukemia protein and its role in premature senescence. The final section explores the role of senescence and autophagy in age-related cardiovascular diseases and the observation that autophagy seems to retard cardiac senescence. Like the two preceding volumes in the series, Volume 3 stands out for its comprehensive approach, its roster of some 26 expert contributors representing seven different countries and its up-to-date review of leading-edge technology and methods.

The key role of ubiquitination and sumoylation in signaling and cancer Book Excerpt:

Ubiquitination and Sumoylation are two important posttranslational modifications that play pivotal roles in a variety of biological functions. Although Ubiquitination is traditionally viewed as a critical mark targeting proteins for proteasome-dependent degradation, recent studies reveal that it also plays nonproteolytic functions. In contrast, Sumoylation is long thought not to target proteins for degradation, accumulating evidence suggests that it can serve a priming effect prerequisite for ubiquitination, thereby inducing protein ubiquitination and degradation. Thus, there is an important cross-talk between sumoylation and ubiquitination in determining protein fate. Deregulation in these two marks may cause aberrant activity of proteins and in turn contributes to cancer development. In this Research Topic, we accept review articles, perspectives, research articles covering any one or both of these two posttranslational modifications in regulating diverse signal transduction pathways and providing the novel insights in unraveling the puzzle as to how they may regulate cancer progression and metastasis.
