Description : "AIDS has made a huge impact on our society medically, socially, politically, legally, and psychologically. Sarah Watstein encapsulates this interdisciplinary issue into approximately 4,000 terms and explains them objectively, clearly, and readably for high school students, adults, and medical professionals. The terms include related diseases such as Kaposi's Sarcoma, treatments such as interleukin, jargon-"no code"- and slang-"bareback sex." The appendixes list statistics, toll-free telephone numbers, Web sites, nonprofit and government organizations, clinical trials, databases, and payment assistance programs. Highly recommended for all libraries."--"Outstanding Reference Sources: the 1999 Selection of New Titles," American Libraries, May 1999. Comp. by the Reference Sources Committee, RUSA, ALA.

Description : A university press is a curious institution, dedicated to the dissemination of learning yet apart from the academic structure; a publishing firm that is in business, but not to make money; an arm of the university that is frequently misunderstood and occasionally attacked by faculty and administration. Max Hall here chronicles the early stages and first sixty years of Harvard University Press in a rich and entertaining book that is at once Harvard history, publishing history, printing history, business history, and intellectual history. The tale begins in 1638 when the first printing press arrived in British North America. It became the property of Harvard College and remained so for nearly half a century. Hall sketches the various forerunners of the "real" Harvard University Press, founded in 1913, and then follows the ups and downs of its first six decades, during which the Press published steadily if not always serenely a total of 4,500 books. He describes the directors and others who left their stamp on the Press or guided its fortunes during these years. And he gives the stories behind such enduring works as Lovejoy's Great Chain of Being, Giedion's Space, Time, and Architecture, Langer's Philosophy in a New Key, and Kelly's Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings.

Description : Dr. Thompson distinguishes the elements of what has heretofore seemed to be a confused stream of forms - the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Aesthetic styles. She analyzes historical material drawn from rare published and unpublished sources, as well as the stylistic elements themselves of books that, largely forgotten now, were major events for the young artists in this typographic revolution. There are 111 illustrations of bindings, title pages, type, and decorations, as well as a very extensive bibliography. Dr. Thompson's landmark study, American Book Design and William Morris, is the first one to document in depth the real extent of Morris' influence on American bookmaking. A unique, profusely illustrated contribution to American intellectual and cultural history, it will appeal not only to book designers, art historians, typographers, and graphic artists, but also to librarians, book collectors, and students of literature.
