Description : Videoland offers a comprehensive view of the "tangible phase" of consumer video, when Americans largely accessed movies as material commodities at video rental stores. Video stores served as a vital locus of movie culture from the early 1980s until the early 2000s, changing the way Americans socialized around movies and collectively made movies meaningful. When films became tangible as magnetic tapes and plastic discs, movie culture flowed out from the theater and the living room, entered the public retail space, and became conflated with shopping and salesmanship. In this process, video stores served as a crucial embodiment of movie culture’s historical move toward increased flexibility, adaptability, and customization. In addition to charting the historical rise and fall of the rental industry, Herbert explores the architectural design of video stores, the social dynamics of retail encounters, the video distribution industry, the proliferation of video recommendation guides, and the often surprising persistence of the video store as an adaptable social space of consumer culture. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, cultural geography, and archival research, Videoland provides a wide-ranging exploration of the pivotal role video stores played in the history of motion pictures, and is a must-read for students and scholars of media history.

Description : Cowboy Imperialism and Hollywood Film explores how Hollywood has employed the frontier myth to sanction imperial behavior. This cultural project integrates the myth, America's secular creation story, with Manifest Destiny, the sugar-coated impetus to conquer without compunction. Through Hollywood - the history teacher who reaches the largest audiences - the imagery of conquest has become effectively naturalized, glorified, and personified in the guise of the mythical frontiersman, such as John Wayne and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. This book examines eighteen movies, ranging from The Green Berets to Raiders of the Lost Ark, from Red River to Hidalgo. Others, from Full Metal Jacket to The Big Lebowski, The Ballad of Little Joe to 25th Hour, posit intriguing revisionist frontier tales.

Description : Movies can be great teaching tools for everything from behavior theories and concepts to ethical dilemmas. For instance, when John (Jack Lemmon) and Max (Walter Matthau) must decide in Grumpier Old Men whether to go to Maxs wedding or once again try to catch the most elusive fish in the lake, Catfish Hunter, they arent sure what to do. In Take Five: Organizational Behavior Alive, cinema instructor and expert Joseph E. Champoux presents carefully selected film scenes that showcase organizational behavior concepts and issues that can be used at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels. Classics like The Godfather, contemporary films like Morning Glory, and even animated films that rely on computer graphics technology all offer valuable insights into understanding organizational behavior. There are even overlooked gems such as James and the Giant Peach, which includes an underappreciated scene showcasing work force diversity. Each scene thats presented includes questions to ask yourself as well as space to write down your own observations. Theres also a list of concepts and examples that you can check off as you see them in a scene.

Description : Musical accompaniment were jazzed up renditions that basically fit the art form like a glove with a stylish beat that usually pounded out the action as the story unfolded. The music set the mood and the audiences followed. Most of these films would never reach America during the era, even though they were generally aimed at the American film goers. The Actors who went to Italy and got involved in these lucrative new genre spinoffs all enjoyed star status, recognition and glow of the limelight that came with it. These are the Actors were talking about here.

Description : The Complete History of American Film Criticism is a chronicle of the lives and work of the most influential film critics of the past 100 years. From the first movie review in the New York Times in 1896 through the Silent Era, the pre- and postwar years, the Film Generation of the 1960s, the Golden Age of the 1970s, and into the 21st century, critics have educated generations of discriminating moviegoers on the differences between good films and bad. They call attention to great directors, cinematographers, production designers, screenwriters, and actors, and shed light on their artistic visions and storytelling sensibilities. People interested in what the great film critics had to say have usually been shortchanged as to their backgrounds, and just why they are qualified to sit in judgment. Using mini-biographies, placed within a chronological framework, The Complete History of American Film Criticism is the biography of a profession whose cultural impact has left an indelible mark on the 20th century’s most significant art form.

Description : While Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are more famously known for their straight comedy routines, they did make a number of films in which horror played a crucial role. The first part of this critical reference examines the Abbott and Costello "Meet the Monsters" spoof films (Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Mummy). The second sections deals with Abbott and Costello's films with horror elements that do not follow this formula: Hold That Ghost, The Time of Their Lives and Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff. The plot of each film is examined in detail with special attention paid to the comedians' styles of comedy, the effect of the horror scenes, and the place of the film in the Abbott and Costello canon. The reactions of critics (then and now) and the influences the films have had on the horror and comedy genres and on pop culture are also discussed. A lengthy introduction provides background on the lives of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello and the development of Universal Studios as the premier horror factory.

Description : A television series is tagged with the label "cult" by the media, advertisers, and network executives when it is considered edgy or offbeat, when it appeals to nostalgia, or when it is considered emblematic of a particular subculture. By these criteria, almost any series could be described as cult. Yet certain programs exert an uncanny power over their fans, encouraging them to immerse themselves within a fictional world. In Cult Television leading scholars examine such shows as The X-Files; The Avengers; Doctor Who, Babylon Five; Star Trek; Xena, Warrior Princess; and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to determine the defining characteristics of cult television and map the contours of this phenomenon within the larger scope of popular culture. Description : This book explores how class-based resources and interests embedded in large organizations are linked to powerful structures and processes which in turn are rapidly polarizing the U.S. into a highly unequal, 'double diamond' class structure. The authors show how and why American class membership in the 21st century is based on an organizationally-based distribution of critical resources including income, investment capital, credentialed skills verified by elite schools, and social connections to organizational leaders.
