Description : This report presents an approximate method to compute the mean value, the mean-square value, and the spectrum of waves in water of finite depth taking into account the effect of wave breaking in the presence of current. It is assumed that there exists a linear and Gaussian ideal wave train whose spectrum is first obtained using the wave energy flux balance equation without considering wave breaking. The Miche wave breaking criterion for waves in finite water depth is used to limit the wave elevation and establish an expression for the breaking wave elevation in terms of the elevation and its second time derivative of the ideal waves. Simple expressions for the mean value, the mean-square value and the spectrum are obtained. These results are applied to the case in which a deepwater unidirectional wave train, propagating normally toward a straight shoreline over gently varying sea bottom of parallel and straight contours, encounters an adverse steady current whose velocity is assumed to be uniformly distributed with depth. Numerical results are obtained and presented in graphic form.

Description : Recent advances have been made in the specification of a shallow-water self-similar spectral form. This spectral form, referred to as the TMA spectrum, substitutes an expression for the shallow-water equilibrium range into the JONSWAP equation for spectral energy density. The JONSWAP parameters are empirically defined through examination of over 2,800 wind sea spectra obtained at various depths and locations. This spectral form is intended to describe single-peaked wind seas which have reached a growth equilibrium in finite depth water. The purposes of this report are to summarize the recent advances, to discuss the range of practical usage, and to provide engineering examples using these new formulations. (Author).

Description : We report the quantitative absorption coefficients of water vapor in a format suitable for calculation of water vapor absorption spectra characterized by instrumental bandpasses of 1 cm−1 or greater in the 670 to 1450 cm−1 region. The coefficients are derived from individual line parameters of H2O and represent a useful way of reducing line parameter data to a practical volume of information for 1 cm−1 resolution spectra of the troposphere. Transmission spectra for three water vapor concentrations show typical applications of the absorption coefficient tables. The application of the data is restricted to conditions within 10% of 1 atmosphere pressure and a temperature of 296 K if a transmission accuracy of 2% is to be maintained.
