Memoirs of the New Age a Book of Stories Prayers and Fables Book Excerpt:

As we strive to find a new relationship with God, we fight, we search, and we cryand so does God. And then we realize that God is not perfect; God is the totality of all being, and we are part of God. Memoirs of the New Age offers a collection of rich fables, introspective prayers, and poignant stories that unveil the struggles of humanity as we embrace the infinite. Beth Green, a spiritual teacher and intuitive counselor, shares a unique voice that has helped hundreds of people to evolve and become greater blessings to those around them. From the pompous but tortured New Age rabbi who lost his congregation, to the young girl who hopes for a sign from God so she can become a nun, Green offers a mirror that allows for spiritual reflection and self-discovery. Other tales, poems, and fables are included that celebrate womanhood, illustrate the connection between sex and spirituality, and bring to life the emotions that accompany a reconciliation with God. The unforgettable characters and poignant words in Memoirs of the New Age will help all of us remember who we are and, most importantly, that we are not alone. Reviews of Memoirs of the New Age: "I love Memoirs of a New Age! And I want to tell you that for me, this is not just a book, its more like an earthquake. A quiet rumble, that tantalizes, then shakes, then kind of explodes many of your long cherished ideas of who god is and what a real relationship with god could be. If youre up for some spiritual awakening, buy this book, check out the website, join a readers discussion club or bring the book to your club! Like a wonderful meal, its meant to be shared." Irene Townsend, PhD Clinical Psychologist "I am building a really intimate relationship with this book the more I read it and the more I discuss it in our book club. At first it was just a great book of stories and poems and prayers. Then I started to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the language and the images, especially in the poems and prayers. Then as I discussed it with others, I began to see how the stories related to me personally and how healing it was for me to go inside and own my experiences as a child or a woman or a spiritual person, feelings prompted by the experiences of the characters or the author. Ive learned so much about myself and theres so much more to learn! This is a book that I dont have to put down when Im done as I have with so many wonderful books Ive read. I am going back over and over it to deepen and enrich my experience of what Im reading. Read it, embrace it, use it, enjoy it, savor it! Im giving this book to everyone I can think of for Christmas!" Helen Hillix-Di Santo, MA, MFT "Dear Editor, I have read Memoirs of The New Age and have been profoundly impacted by these stories. The author, Beth Green, has an uncanny ability to express our human experiences in terms of seeing how we act and react to life is so intricately tied to our perceptions and beliefs about God. The writing is real, poignant, challenging and provides the opportunity for me to explore my own perceptions of God through the character's eyes. I will be reading this over and over. Thank you for publishing it." Chris Reese

With a Book in Their Hands Book Excerpt:

First Place Winner of the 2015 International Latino Book Award for Best Latino Focused Nonfiction Book Literary history is a history of reading. What happens during the act of reading is the subject of the branch of literary scholarship known as reader-response theory. Does the text guide the reader? Does the reader operate independently of the text? Questions like these shape the approach of the essays in this book, edited by a scholar known for his groundbreaking work in using reader-response theory as a window into Chicana and Chicano literature. Manuel M. Martín-Rodríguez has overseen several research projects aimed at documenting Chicana and Chicano reading practices and experiences. Here he gathers diverse and passionate accounts of reading drawn from that research. For many, books served as refuges from the sorrows of a childhood marked by violence or parental abandonment. Several of the contributors here salute the roles of teachers in introducing poetry and stories into their lives.

The Whole World in a Book Book Excerpt:

Nineteenth-century readers had an appetite for books so big they seemed to contain the whole world: immense novels, series of novels, encyclopaedias. Especially in Eurasia and North America, especially among the middle and upper classes, people had the space, time, and energy for very long books. More than other multi-volume nineteenth-century collections, the dictionaries, or their descendants of the same name, remain with us in the twenty-first century. Online or on paper, people still consult Oxford for British English, Webster for American, Grimm for German, Littr for French, Dahl for Russian. Even in spaces whose literary languages already had long philological and lexicographic traditions-Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin-the burgeoning imperialisms and nationalisms of the nineteenth century generated new dictionaries. The Whole World in a Book explores a period in which globalization, industrialization, and social mobility were changing language in unimaginable ways. Newly automated technologies and systems of communication expanded the international reach of dictionaries, while rising literacy rates, book consumption, and advertising led to their unprecedented popularization. Dictionaries in the nineteenth century became more than dictionaries: they were battlefields between prestige languages and lower-status dialects; national icons celebrating the language and literature of the nation-state; and sites of innovative authorship where middle and lower classes, volunteers, women, colonial subjects, the deaf, and missionaries joined the ranks of educated white men in defining how people communicated and understood the world around them. In this volume, eighteen of the world's leading scholars investigate these lexicographers asking how the world within which they lived supported their projects? What did language itself mean for them? What goals did they try to accomplish in their dictionaries?

No Dope A Book of Enlightenment and Pathway to Love Book Excerpt:

When it comes to the world of Addiction, we find some people sabotaging their chance at a new life {recovery} just so they can again experience the drug and it's effect. Whether this action is carried out because of an outside influence, or it is purely an act originated by the person; will become part of the diagnosis once the process to recovery begins. At the moment of relapse, it then becomes a deadly game and if the using does not stop, they may go insane or even die from drug overdose. All people agree, the addict must recover, but there must be a genuine recovery process outlined in order to do that. In addition, we cannot become someone who has closed his or her eyes to the world and call ourselves recovered. The recovery world itself calls for an adjustment to be made in the person's overall life; their standards and principles must change if need be. Life is a gift, and we are placed within it to experience a demonstration. This demonstration will begin to show us secrets about ourselves and especially if he/she is of Black decent and have a connection with the slave holocaust here in America. Why? Because of who and what you are and where you came from, and what you carry with you into the process of recovery. The process of recovery {the spirituality} has many variances and can easily cause confusion if you do not become equipped with a guide. All of the research on recovery has been done including the History that surrounds Black people of America. In this outlined text; you will see, there is more to you and your recovery than what meets the eye; and your heritage connects to deep spiritual roots, which make it virtually impossible to live without consciousness on a higher level. In a Book Club Far Away Book Excerpt:

From the author of Once Upon a Sunset and The Key to Happily Ever After comes a heartwarming and moving novel following three Army wives—estranged friends—who must overcome their differences when one of them is desperate for help. Regina Castro, Adelaide Wilson-Chang, and Sophie Walden used to be best friends. As Army wives at Fort East, they bonded during their book club and soon became inseparable. But when an unimaginable betrayal happened amongst the group, the friendship abruptly ended, and they haven’t spoken since. That’s why, eight years later, Regina and Sophie are shocked when they get a call for help from Adelaide. Adelaide’s husband is stationed abroad, and without any friends or family near her new home of Alexandria, Virginia, she has no one to help take care of her young daughter when she has to undergo emergency surgery. For the sake of an innocent child, Regina and Sophie reluctantly put their differences aside to help an old friend. As the three women reunite, they must overcome past hurts and see if there’s any future for their friendship. Featuring Tif Marcelo’s signature “enchanting prose” (Amy E. Reichert, author of The Coincidence of Coconut Cake) and the books that brought them together in the first place, In a Book Club Far Away honors the immense power of female friendship and how love can defy time, distance, and all old wounds.

Anonymous Skeptics Book Excerpt:

At its deepest, philosophical skepticism questions the sense of language. Skepticism manifests itself in different forms, three of the most powerful being logical, external-world, and religious skepticism. How has philosophy of religion addressed these challenges? The attempt to answer this question leads Lance Ashdown to a consideration of three prominent contemporary philosophers of religion: Richard Swinburne, John Hick, and William Alston. The author shows that these philosophers are indeed open to the criticisms of the three types of skepticism mentioned above. According to Ashdown, they are rightly to be considered as 'anonymous skeptics'. Readers familiar with the work of the theologian Karl Rahner will recognize an echo of his famous doctrine that non-Christian religious believers are really 'anonymous Christians', i.e., Christian believers who do not recognize themselves as such. In a similar way, the philosophers of religion under consideration are skeptics who most certainly would not identify themselves as such. They are anonymous skeptics in the sense that their epistemologies create the very conditions that allow for the severe and, on their own terms, unanswerable challenges of skepticism. At the same time, none of these philosophers thinks that skeptical objections pose a devastating or unanswerable threat to their epistemologies. For example, each of them is an avowed believer in God and is fully aware of the challenge of religious skepticism, yet none believes that skepticism need cause a rational Christian to abandon his or her beliefs. Nevertheless, each of the three philosophers adheres to a philosophical theory that remains open to the devastating critique of Philo in David Hume's essay Dialogue Concerning Natural Religion - who argues at his deepest that talk of God is meaningless.

Zones of the Spirit A Book of Thoughts Book Excerpt:

Seldom has a man gone through such profound religious changes as this Swede, who died last May. The demonic element in him, which spurred him on restlessly, made him scale heaven and fathom hell, gave him glimpses of bliss and damnation. He bore the Cain's mark on his brow: "A fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be." He was fundamentally religious, for everyone who searches after God is so,Ña commonplace truth certainly, but one which needs to be constantly reiterated. And Strindberg's search was more painful, exact, and persevering than that of most people. He was never content with superficial formulas, but pressed to the heart of the matter, and followed each winding of the labyrinthine problem with endless patience. Too often the Divinity which he thought he had discovered turned out a delusion, to be scornfully rejected the moment afterwards. Until he found the God, whom he worshipped to the end of his days, and whose existence he resolutely maintained against deniers. As a child he had been brought up in devout belief in God, in submission to the injustice of life, and in faith in a better hereafter. He regarded God as a Father, to Whom he made known his little wants and anxieties. But a youth with hard experiences followed his childhood. The struggle for daily bread began, and his heavenly Father seemed to fail him. He appeared to regard unmoved, from some Olympian height, the desperate struggles of humanity below. Then the defiant element which slumbered in Strindberg wrathfully awoke, and he gradually developed into a free-thinker. It fared with him as it often does with young and independent characters who think. Beginning with dissent from this and that ecclesiastical dogma, his criticism embraced an ever-widening range, and became keener and more unsparing. At last every barrier of respect and reverence fell, the defiant spirit of youth broke like a flood over all religious dogmas, swept them away, and did not stop short of criticising God Himself.
