Description : From the author of 365 Tao and a leading authority on Taoist practice and philosophy comes a completely innovative translation of the classic text of Eastern wisdom, the I Ching. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient manual for divining the future. Its basic text is traditionally attributed to the Chinese King Wen, the Duke of Zhou, and the philosopher Confucius. By tossing coins, rolling dice, using a computer, or, more traditionally, counting yarrow stalks, one can create a seemingly random combination of heads or tails, odd or even, yin or yang, to construct six lines (for example, solid for odd numbers or broken for even numbers). These six lines make up a hexagram that provides advice, predictions, and answers to questions on topics from love and career to family and finance. While known mostly as a tool of divination, the I Ching is also a repository of centuries of wisdom. Most of the existing translations offer either dense, scholarly commentary or little more than fortune-cookie platitudes, but in The Living I Ching Deng Ming-Dao takes a more holistic approach. His new translation recovers the true wisdom and philosophy of this ancient classic, so that the I Ching becomes more than just a book of fortune-telling -- it becomes a manual for living.

Description : The cultures of ancient China and ancient Greece have exerted immeasurable influence on later civilizations. The texts and cultural values of classical China spread throughout East Asia and became the foundation of learning in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Greek learning and culture receive credit for many of the intellectual paradigms of the West. Probably the one which is most distinctly Western is the tradition of logical proof and the related assumption that, as Aristotle put it in 'Metaphysics' 980, 'we all desire to know.' In contrast, the Chinese tradition, as exemplified by Laozi's 'Dao de jing,' cautions that through our desire to know we may forfeit wisdom, thus engendering a split between knowledge and wisdom. 'The Siren and the Sage' is a comparative study of what some of the most influential writers of ancient China and ancient Greece thought it meant to know and whether they distinguished knowledge from wisdom. It surveys selected works of poetry, history and philosophy from roughly the eighth through the second centuries BCE, focusing on the 'Odyssey,' the ancient Chinese 'Classic of Poetry,' Thucydides' 'History of the Peloponnesian War,' Sima Qian's 'Records of the Historian,' Plato's 'Symposium,' Laozi's 'Dao de jing' and the writings of Zhuangzi. The intention, through such juxtaposition, is to introduce foundational texts of each tradition, texts which continue to influence most of the world's peoples. It is intriguing to ask what awareness, if any, these distinctive cultures had of each other. A considerable body of scholarship comparing ancient Greece and ancient China now exists. Scholars are presenting evidence that the two cultures may actually have been aware of each other's presence, even though that awareness was presumably indirect, perhaps mediated by the nomadic peoples of Central Asia. While not directly contributing evidence, the authors argue that comparing the cultures of Greece and China will continue to be an irresistible and important scholarly debate. The book offers a provocative study which is accessible to students and general readers and at the same time contributes to the debate.

Description : This book is translated into English for the first time. Dirty tricks are what people use to break the rules in their favour. So why talking about dirty tricks in a book of wisdom? Naturally, great wisdom should never be cunning; it involves intelligence, deep insight, good sense and so on. However, great wisdom is often brought down by small tricks. To guard against this, a clear understanding of tricks is necessary. And, in any case, a well-used trick can be as effective as great wisdom; tricks can help kingdoms to win battles and protect citizens from their enemies. No one should feel ashamed or afraid to discuss them. Think of our great mountain, Mt Taishan. It may be the highest in the whole country, but that doesn't mean it despises every little pile of sand that dreams of growing into a hill; nor will the ocean mind one little bit if a stream wishes to become a river. And so, even though tricks may seem trivial compared to wisdom, we should never underestimate their power. Even heroes have been known to lie from time to time. And, don't forget, as the saying goes, there's honour among thieves. Just as wisdom becomes more profound through practice, so does cunning. Evil-doers use cunning to cheat their way to food or drinks; the same cunning, on a larger scale, can bring down a whole kingdom. Therefore, tricks are actually powerful; if you think you don't have the wisdom to fight them at the moment, you'd better learn how to avoid them!

The book has 14 chapters, each addressing a specific Chinese urban planning and construction topic with examples and applications in various cities and regions, and each providing an all-around analysis of Chinese urban development issues at different scales, including government administrations, planning progresses, urban investments, social impacts and construction models. The book provides a comprehensive overview of urban planning and construction in China, especially its successful experiences in the historical period and modern era, which will greatly benefit scholars and readers who are interested in China, as well as urban planners, architects and historians. The book is organized into 4 main parts. Part 1 focuses on "historical wisdom" to summarize ancient Chinese efforts to cope with nature and the environment. It interprets the unique wisdom of ancient Chinese cities related to regional design, water conservancy system, and urban districts. Part 2 presents the “transformation" of urban planning in China by learning from both the traditional value and western experiences based on several cases, such as the spatial development of Beijing and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei capital region, the preservation of Qingdao city, the urban community development and regeneration in Chongqing city. Part 3 explores the "green and eco-city" by looking towards the future, illustrating Chinese practices and efforts to build more sustainable cities, such as green and low-carbon city construction in Wuhan, healthy city planning and eco-cities construction in China. Part 4 prospects the “modern miracles” brought forth by technological innovation and economic growth, and introduces the newest planning trends in China, such as the E-commerce Taobao villages in China and the innovation districts in Beijing. Description : In the past three decades, China has risen from near collapse to a powerhouse -- upending nearly every convention on the world stage, whether policy or business. China is now the globe’s second largest economy, second largest exporter, a manufacturing machine that has lifted 500 million of its citizens from poverty while producing more than one million US dollar millionaires. Then why do China’s leaders describe the nation’s economic model as “unstable and unsustainable”? Because it is. James McGregor has spent 25 years in China as a businessman, journalist and author. In this, his latest highly readable book, he offers extensive new research that pulls back the curtain on China’s economic power. He describes the much-vaunted “China Model” as one of authoritarian capitalism, a unique system that, in its own way, is terminating itself. It is proving incompatible with global trade and business governance. It is threatening multinationals, which fear losing their business secrets and technology to China’s mammoth state-owned enterprises. It is fielding those SOEs – China’s “national champions” -- into a global order angered by heavily subsidized state capitalism. And it is relying on an outdated investment and export model that’s running out of steam. What has worked in the past, won’t work in the future. The China Model must be radically overhauled if the country hopes to continue its march toward prosperity. The nation must consume more of what it makes. It must learn to innovate. It must unleash private enterprise. And the Communist Party bosses? They must cede their pervasive and smothering hold on economic power to foster the growth, and thus social stability, that they can’t survive without. Government must step back, the state-owned economy must be brought to heel, and opportunity must be freed. During the Tang Dynasty, an official in the imperial court observed: “No ancient wisdom, no followers.” He was lamenting that regime was headed alone into dangerous and uncharted waters without any precedent for guidance. Again today – as McGregor makes clear – this is China’s greatest challenge.

The ancient Chinese held tea and the various types of tea in high regard for its medicinal and rejuvenating properties. They prized the teas that grew high in the mountains, in crags and crevices in the rocks. They believed that tea was best brewed with pure, clean, mountain spring water, and that fire should be from clean and natural sources since properly heated water would define the subtle tastes of the tea. Using the proper utensils enhanced the taste and experience of tea drinking. And they believed that where you had your tea, along with the people with whom you shared the experience, all determine the value of the tea. The Ancient Art of Tea contains vital information to assist tea drinkers in their quest for yet another pot of delicious tea. Description : The complete twenty books of philosophic discussion by Chinese philosopher Confucius are presented here anew in hardcover. Originally, these sayings and conversations were penned during the Warring States period of Chinese antiquity. The subjects range from wise behavior in times of crisis to instruction upon how to live a peaceful life characterized by serenity, humility and good work. The importance of family life and community cooperation are alluded to, offering insight into the mores and customs of ancient China. The politics of the time, rife with infighting between noble families and dukedoms, attract consideration of Confucius and his companions. To better illustrate his points, examples and analogies are readily offered by Confucius, who engages with other philosophers through the course of the twenty named books comprising the core text. This edition's translator is James Legge, a Scottish Sinologist who spent his lifetime in China translating the philosophical and artistic classics.

Description : This book is essentially a collection of a number traditional Chinese martial apothegms, precepts, maxims, and other such terse, briefly put martial wisdom based on the original martial practices of the old Shaolin Buddhist monks in Henan. Ostensibly, it is a work attributed to a scholar working in the library of the Shaolin Temple in the early 18th century. The original text has long been lost to study, but a competent scribe's copy from the 19th century, now held in the National Library of China, was translated into German by Friedrich W. Weisman, a scholar of Oriental Literature at the University of Berlin. This book was subsequently privately printed in 1912. The English edition as published here, working solely from this earlier German edition, has here been provided to help make the work better known to a wider audience. As far as possible under difficult circumstances, this book is a faithful translation of Weisman's, and one that hopefully also does homage to the original Chinese text.

An influence on such cultural icons as Bob Dylan, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Philip K. Dick, and Philip Pullman, the I Ching is turned to by millions around the world for insights on spiritual growth, business, medicine, genetics, game theory, strategic thinking, and leadership, and of course for the window it opens on China. Culling, a renowned occultist and expert on the Yi King (also known as the I Ching), undertook the task of "scraping away the barnacles," as he put it, that had fastened themselves onto the Yi over the centuries. In fact, much of the material in the most popular editions of the I Ching was added and not part of the original work. Most of the additions were made in the eleventh century. The original book was written 4,000 years earlier. In The Pristine Yi King, you will learn: ·The history of the Yi King, including its five evolutions ·How the Yi King was originally used ·The true order of the hexagrams ·The way to quickly memorize the order and meaning of all the hexagrams ·Chess and the Yi King ·How to use the Yi King today, without referring to any books In The Pristine Yi King, you will discover some amazing history of the ancient book. For example, did you know that the order of the hexagrams was purposely changed? It's true. It was done by King Wan who, while imprisoned, used this as a secret code to communicate with his followers while protecting himself from further government retribution. But most importantly, you'll learn the original and obvious (when you see it) order and meanings for each of the hexagrams. The use of the Yi King will become so clear that you will be able to use it to give accurate readings without consulting any book. No longer will you have to ponder elusive passages (which were codes, anyway). Instead, you'll have one of the finest, clearest, and most accessible tools for divination and spirituality ever.
