Description : The true story of Kate Warne and the other women who served as Pinkertons, fulfilling the adage, “Well-behaved Women Seldom Make History.” Most students of the Old West and American law enforcement history know the story of the notorious and ruthless Pinkerton Detective Agency and the legends behind their role in establishing the Secret Service and tangling with Old West Outlaws. But the true story of Kate Warne, an operative of the Pinkerton Agency and the first woman detective in America—and the stories of the other women who served their country as part of the storied crew of crime fighters—are not well known. For the first time, the stories of these intrepid women are collected here and richly illustrated throughout with numerous historical photographs. From Kate Warne’s probable affair with Allan Pinkerton, and her part in saving the life of Abraham Lincoln in 1861 to the lives and careers of the other women who broke out of the Cult of True Womanhood in pursuit of justice, these true stories add another dimension to our understanding of American history.

Description : Musaicum Books presents to you this carefully created volume of "The Leavenworth Case & Other Detective Novels - 22 Thrillers in One Edition". This ebook has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel". Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits". She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green's innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews", the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Table of Contents: The Leavenworth Case A Strange Disappearance X Y Z: A Detective Story Hand and Ring The Mill Mystery The Forsaken Inn Cynthia Wakeham's Money Agatha Webb One of My Sons The Filigree Ball The Millionaire Baby The Chief Legatee' The Woman in the Alcove The Mayor's Wife The House of the Whispering Pines Three Thousand Dollars Initials Only Dark Hollow The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow That Affair Next Door Lost Man's Lane The Circular Study

Description : The greatest ever anthology of Victorian detective stories, The Dead Witness gathers the finest police and private detective adventure stories from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including a wide range of overlooked gems. 'The Dead Witness', the 1866 title story by Australian writer Mary Fortune, is the first known detective story by a woman, a suspenseful clue-strewn manhunt in the Outback. This forgotten treasure sets the tone for the whole anthology as surprises appear from every direction, including more female detectives and authors than you can find in any other anthology of its kind. Pioneer women writers such as Anna Katharine Green, Mary E. Wilkins and C. L. Pirkis take you from rural America to bustling London, introducing you to female detectives from Loveday Brooke to Dorcas Dene and Madelyn Mack. In other stories, you will meet November Joe, the Canadian half-Native backwoods detective who stars in 'The Crime at Big Tree Portage' and demonstrates that Sherlockian attention to detail works as well in the woods as in the city. Holmes himself is here, too, of course - not in another reprint though - but in the first two chapters of A Study in Scarlet, the first Holmes case, in which the great man meets and dazzles Watson. Authors range from luminaries such as Charles Dickens to the forgotten author who helped inspire Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue', the first real detective story. Bret Harte is here as is E. W. Hornung, creator of master thief Raffles. Naturally Wilkie Collins couldn't be left behind. Michael Sims's new collection reveals the fascinating and entertaining youth of what would mature into the most popular genre of the twentieth century.

Description : Bridget Flynn – A Female Detective Bridget Flynn Detective Series Book 1 "Whatever women do, they must do two times as well as men to be half as good. Fortunately, this is not difficult." Bridget Flynn said when interviewed by the Eagle Lake Headlight. After nine novels demonstrating the career of the heroic and famed detective Vincent Gideon, the time came for his passing the torch to Bridget Flynn. Times have changed, and the female detective found it was time to burst into the mystery scene, and she does it with wit and flair, paving the way for other women sleuths. Fans around the world adored the woman detective, Bridget Flynn, in her debut as a side-kick with Vincent Gideon in the novel, Rosenthall, Book 1 in the Gideon Detective Series. She used her undercover name of Agatha throughout the case. In this romance whodunit series, the lady detective, with the help of Chief Tommy Jackson of the Black Rock Cove police department, navigates her cases and sex life with good humor. Intelligence and an occasional longleaf Cuban cigar describe this attractive redhead detective. This first novel in Sidney St. James widely acclaimed Detective Series tells story after story of our delightful, cunning and brilliant woman sleuth, Bridget Flynn. Watch as James makes the world a battlefield for this female investigator… from petty insults to opening her own door. Drop this woman into a man's world and watch the sparks fly. Immediately upon setting up shop and hanging her shingle in a small office in Black Rock Cove, Flynn is hired to follow the Countess from Norderney Island after her husband, Count William died mysteriously. (Read about the beautiful countess in Book 7 of the Love Lost Series, NORDERNEY ISLAND) After solving the case, she's invited to take on two high profile cases, one to break up a secret society, the Knights of the Silver Circle and the other, the robbing of valuables and cash from the U. S. Postal System. What really rattled her cage, more so than investigating robberies, murder and cold cases like Rosenthall, is the lack of credit given to her by all the newspapers in the country. When interviewed by a journalist who knew Bridget was getting a bad shake, she said, "Whatever women do they must do two times as well as men to be half as good. Fortunately, this is not difficult." Author James has found the opportunity to allow his female main characters the time to break the rules! For example, with a stroke of James' keyboard in the Rose of Brays Bayou, the award-winning author brings to life in creative nonfiction the story of the Runaway Scrape starring Dilue Rose Harris. Description : In the hands of many of the great writers, the unravelling of mystery is only one strand within a complex project. Other things get unravelled, too - the belief in a rationally explicable world, in the beneficent, ordering force of culture and civilization. Constantly the detective story delights in muddying the waters, in acknowledging the omnipresent possibilities of anarchy and carnage. As a genre, it is supremely able to combine popular appeal with the ability to disturb, provoke and challenge the reader. The essays in this volume all pay tribute to, and seek to account for, the astonishing durability of the detective story as a narrative genre. They range generously, taking a variety of theoretical approaches and including detective fiction in languages other than English, but particular attention is paid to the 'Golden Age' of English detective story-writing and to the 'hard-boiled' American version of the genre. This is a collection that will appeal to the scholar and to the devotee alike; to all those, in fact, who cannot resist the lure of finding out whodunit.

Description : From the New York Times bestselling author of Justice for Sara and The First Wife Erica Spindler comes The Other Girl, a chilling new thriller about a ritualistic murder of a college professor that sends a small town cop back into the trauma she thought she’d put behind her. "Explosive.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A fantastic thriller from one of the best in the genre!” —RT Reviews A horrific crime. One witness—a fifteen year old girl from the wrong side of the tracks, one known for lying and her own brushes with the law. Is it any surprise no one believed her? Officer Miranda Rader of the Harmony, Louisiana PD is known for her honesty, integrity, and steady hand in a crisis—but that wasn’t always so. Miranda comes from the town of Jasper, a place about the size of a good spit on a hot day, and her side of the tracks was the wrong one. She’s worked hard to earn the respect of her coworkers and the community. When Miranda and her partner are called to investigate the murder of one of the town’s most beloved college professors, they’re unprepared for the brutality of the scene. This murder is unlike any they’ve ever investigated, and just when Miranda thinks she’s seen the worst of it, she finds a piece of evidence that chills her to the core: a faded newspaper clipping about that terrible night fifteen years ago. The night she’d buried, along with her past and the girl she’d been back then. Until now that grave had stayed sealed...except for those times, in the deepest part of the night, when the nightmares came: of a crime no one believed happened and the screams of the girl they believed didn’t exist. Then another man turns up dead, this one a retired cop. Not just any cop—the one who took her statement that night. Two murders, two very different men, two killings that on the surface had nothing in common—except Miranda.

Description : I am not an inquisitive woman, but when, in the middle of a certain warm night in September, I heard a carriage draw up at the adjoining house and stop, I could not resist the temptation of leaving my bed and taking a peep through the curtains of my window. First: because the house was empty, or supposed to be so, the family still being, as I had every reason to believe, in Europe; and secondly: because, not being inquisitive, I often miss in my lonely and single life much that it would be both interesting and profitable for me to know. Luckily I made no such mistake this evening. I rose and looked out, and though I was far from realizing it at the time, took, by so doing, my first step in a course of inquiry which has ended—— But it is too soon to speak of the end. Rather let me tell you what I saw when I parted the curtains of my window in Gramercy Park, on the night of September 17, 1895. Not much at first glance, only a common hack drawn up at the neighboring curb-stone. The lamp which is supposed to light our part of the block is some rods away on the opposite side of the street, so that I obtained but a shadowy glimpse of a young man and woman standing below me on the pavement. I could see, however, that the woman—and not the man—was putting money into the driver's hand. The next moment they were on the stoop of this long-closed house, and the coach rolled off. It was dark, as I have said, and I did not recognize the young people,—at least their figures were not familiar to me; but when, in another instant, I heard the click of a night-key, and saw them, after a rather tedious fumbling at the lock, disappear from the stoop, I took it for granted that the gentleman was Mr. Van Burnam's eldest son Franklin, and the lady some relative of the family; though why this, its most punctilious member, should bring a guest at so late an hour into a house devoid of everything necessary to make the least exacting visitor comfortable, was a mystery that I retired to bed to meditate upon....

Description : At this word, with its suggestion of crime, her air of conscious power vanished in sudden collapse. Possibly she had seen the significant gesture with which the Curator pointed out a quiver from which one of the arrows was missing. That this was so, was shown by her next question: "But where is the bow? Look about on the floor. You will find none. How can an arrow be shot without a bow?" "It cannot be," came from some one at her back. "But it can be driven home like a dagger if the hand wielding it is sufficiently powerful." A cry left her lips; she seemed to listen as for some echo; then in a wild abandonment which ignored person and place she flung herself again at the dead girl's side, and before the astonished people surrounding her could intervene, she had caught up the body in her arms, and bending over it, whispered word after word into the poor child's closed ear....

Description : Mr. Gryce was melancholy. He had attained that period in life when the spirits flag and enthusiasm needs a constant spur, and of late there had been a lack of special excitement, and he felt dull and superannuated. He was even contemplating resigning his position on the force and retiring to the little farm he had bought for himself in Westchester; and this in itself did not tend to cheerfulness, for he was one to whom action was a necessity and the exercise of his mental faculties more inspiring than any possible advantage which might accrue to him from their use. But he was not destined to carry out this impulse yet. For just at the height of his secret dissatisfaction there came a telephone message to Headquarters which roused the old man to something like his former vigor and gave to the close of this gray fall day an interest he had not expected to feel again in this or any other kind of day. It was sent from Carter's well-known drug store, and was to the effect that a lady had just sent a boy in from the street to say that a strange crime had been committed in ----'s mansion round the corner. The boy did not know the lady, and was shy about showing the money she had given him, but that he had money was very evident, also, that he was frightened enough for his story to be true. If the police wished to communicate with him, he could be found at Carter's, where he would be detained till an order for his release should be received. A strange crime! That word "strange" struck Mr. Gryce, and made him forget his years in wondering what it meant. Meanwhile the men about him exchanged remarks upon the house brought thus unexpectedly to their notice. As it was one of the few remaining landmarks of the preceding century, and had been made conspicuous moreover by the shops, club-houses, and restaurants pressing against it on either side, it had been a marked spot for years even to those who knew nothing of its history or traditions.

Description : 'Excision of the wound, then?' 'That is it. If it be on the finger, take the finger off. So said my father always. But think of where this wound is, and that it is my wife. It is dreadful!'... 'It appears to be that or nothing, ' said [the doctor] brusquely. 'It is better to lose a lip than a life.' Best known for his immortal detective Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote many stories set in the world of medicine as well as engrossing tales of adventure. Set in plush Londonand on the wild moors and fells of rural England, these stories are peopled with a host of compelling characters: lunatics and loners; obsessed lovers; beautiful, mysterious women; and, of course, men of medicine. In this collection, a surgeon is called out to draw poison from a wound inflicted by a mysterious dagger; a student at Oxford is pursued by an Egyptian mummy come to life; the surgeon of Hoyland finds himself threatened when a woman doctor sets up practice next door; and a scholar seeking solitude on the desolate coast of the Mansie Bay in Scotland finds his peace shattered when a shipwreck brings a beautiful young Russian girl to his doorstep. Racy, engaging, thoughtful stories which have stood the test of time, The Case of Lady Sannox will appeal to all readers of fiction.

Description : THAT the guilty person for whom Eleanore Leavenworth stood ready to sacrifice herself was one for whom she had formerly cherished affection, I could no longer doubt; love, or the strong sense of duty growing out of love, being alone sufficient to account for such determined action. Obnoxious as it was to all my prejudices, one name alone, that of the commonplace secretary, with his sudden heats and changeful manners, his odd ways and studied self-possession, would recur to my mind whenever I asked myself who this person could be. Not that, without the light which had been thrown upon the affair by Eleanore's strange behavior, I should have selected this man as one in any way open to suspicion; the peculiarity of his manner at the inquest not being marked enough to counteract the improbability of one in his relations to the deceased finding sufficient motive for a crime so manifestly without favorable results to himself. But if love had entered as a factor into the affair, what might not be expected? James Harwell, simple amanuensis to a retired tea-merchant, was one man; James Harwell, swayed by passion for a woman beautiful as Eleanore Leavenworth, was another; and in placing him upon the list of those parties open to suspicion I felt I was only doing what was warranted by a proper consideration of probabilities. But, between casual suspicion and actual proof, what a gulf! To believe James Harwell capable of guilt, and to find evidence enough to accuse him of it, were two very different things. I felt myself instinctively shrink from the task, before I had fully made up my mind to attempt it; some relenting thought of his unhappy position, if innocent, forcing itself upon me, and making my very distrust of him seem personally ungenerous if not absolutely unjust. If I had liked the man better, I should not have been so ready to look upon him with doubt....

Description : When the Port City mayor is shot dead on a dark city street, a missing dog leads veteran Detective Peach to a former beauty queen linked to the mayor in a "lovey-dovey" way. Peach and his ride-along newspaper reporter Paige ponder the possibilities: a botched robbery, a hit man, a lovers' spat, municipal corruption, a drug deal gone bad. "I've never been involved in a case with so many questions," Peach says, as the investigation takes several unexpected twists. Peach and Paige are convinced that the beauty queen is the key to the mystery. But how? Of her, Peach says, "People who lie a little tend to lie a lot." The events take place in the late 1960s, but the true story cannot be told until now. Why? And who is "the other woman" who plays such a crucial role in this bewildering tragedy? The Other Woman is a story of misunderstandings and misleading accounts, of people involved in events beyond their control and full comprehension, and of youthful indiscretions leading to tragic conclusions. As always, appearances can be deceiving.
