Description : "Are we living in an age of moral decay or moral growth?" James Kenney asks his audiences in talks in the U.S. and abroad. The pessimists win out, citing everything from road rage to economic crisis, religious fanaticism, global violence, and environmental disasters. But the good news, says Kenney, is that what we see is not what we get. We misperceive things because we’re in a period of accelerated cultural evolution, or "sea change." The last one being 300 years ago, it’s no wonder we may not grasp what’s happening now. Kenney illustrates using two intersecting waves: A dominant wave, representing worn-out values such as patriarchy, racial inequality, the inevitability of war, exploitation of nature, and materialism, is on the decline. Another wave, representing more evolved values such as gender equality, nonviolence, spirituality, ecology, human rights, is on the rise. At this point in time, the influence of the two waves is about equal. It is a crosscurrent marked by chaotic change, uncertainty, identity crisis, and extremism. But it is also enriched by new understanding, energy, commitment, and spiritual growth. Kenney not only provides a historical perspective on the phenomenon, he ends the book with 12 principles for personal growth.

Description : In addition to abridging the contents of the two best-selling World Religions volumes (Eastern Traditions and Western Traditions), contributors to this concise-volume text have reworked the original material to focus on six specific areas of analysis: the major origins of the movement; thecrystallization of its teachings; the major divisions within the tradition; how adherents practice their faith; cultural expressions; and how the tradition has responded to the various changes - intellectual, social, technological - of modern times. This more structural approach will make it easierfor students to compare and contrast traditions, resulting in a solid, well-rounded introduction to the study of world religions.

Here, for the first time, a selection of Ninian Smart's wide-ranging writings is organised systematically under a set of categories which both comprehend and also illuminate his varied output over a career spanning half a century. The editor, John Shepherd, was Principal Lecturer in Religion and Philosophy at the University of Cumbria. He first met Smart as a postgraduate student, and recently helped establish the Ninian Smart Archive at the University of Lancaster.

Description : This beloved classic brings together in one volume all the major themes of the Dalai Lama's teachings such as religious values, the four noble truths, karma, compassion, and meditation. Drawn from the lectures he gave during his first three visits to North America, the book covers the core subject matter of Tibetan Buddhism, as presented for the first time to an English-speaking audience. The chapters are arranged developmentally from simple to complex topics, which include the luminous nature of the mind, the four noble truths, karma, the common goals of the world's religions, meditation, deities, and selflessness. Central to all these teachings is the necessity of compassion--which the Dalai Lama says is "the essence of religion" and "the most precious thing there is."
